Havana, Cuba.- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez reiterated today that the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States is a genocidal, criminal policy that violates international law.

The blockade, formally declared in 1962, is reinforced, wrote the Cuban Foreign Relations incumbent in his Twitter account, where he denounced that ‘it is deliberately aimed at damaging the daily lives of our people.

Rodriguez added that the financial siege is intended to generate shortages and difficulties, deprive us of financial resources and strangle the Cuban economy.

The Cuban authorities denounce this policy as the main obstacle to the development of the Caribbean country, as well as to the achievement of Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals.

They also reiterate that the intensification of the blockade continues to be the central axis of Washington’s policy towards the island, with increasingly notable effects in its extraterritorial implementation.

The damage caused by the application of these unilateral sanctions in almost six decades amounts to 922,6 billion dollars, taking into account the depreciation of the dollar against gold.

On the other hand, between March 2018 and April 2019 this policy caused losses close to 4.3 billion dollars, according to official data.

In 1991, Cuba presented a draft resolution to the U.N. General Assembly against the blockade, which was withdrawn due to U.S. pressure on many countries.

However, the following year it was presented again and voted on in plenary.

Since then, 27 resolutions have been adopted calling for an end to this hostile policy towards the Caribbean island, with the majority support of the international community.
