Guantanamo, Cuba.- As part of the Country Program implemented by the government of Cuba, new irrigation systems delivered to Guantanamo farmers by the World Food Program (WFP) are installed today in this province.
The equipment, consisting of pipes, motor pumps and turbines will allow the increase of the bean crop per hectare, the strengthening of its production chain, which will contribute to the substitution of imports in the agricultural sector, according to Norberto Roll, representative of the WFP in Guantanamo.
Over a hundred producers from the most eastern province of Cuba benefit from these systems, acquired with funding from the Government of Canada and which is integrated into the actions developed by that UN agency to guarantee the food and nutritional security of vulnerable groups on the island, he assured.
According to the statements of Roll, the acquisition by the agricultural sector of the province, of these new equipment, will enable the irrigation of about 500 hectares for the cultivation of the grass, which will result in a greater yield of grain per hectare for the benefit of the local population, the official said.
The Country Program project for food and nutrition security in Cuba, consists of supporting local governments to achieve greater food and nutrition security, it corresponds to the development priorities of the nation and the Guidelines for Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution in terms of food security.
Over 900,000 people, from 43 municipalities of the five eastern provinces, Matanzas and Pinar del Río, currently benefit from the results of the application of this initiative, according to official reports.
