MEXICO CITY, Mexico. – An earthquake of magnitude 8.4 on the Richter scale shook several Mexican states in the early morning of last Wednesday, causing panic among the population that went to the streets before the strong movement.

The epicenter was located about one hundred kilometers from Tonala, in the southeast of the country and its effects were felt in Mexico City and other locations in the center and south. Two aftershocks were recorded shortly thereafter.

After the earthquake, part of Mexico City was without electricity, while military helicopters overflew the area to assess possible effects on buildings, while the government reinforced the military presence in the streets.

At first it was said that the earthquake could cause a tsunami because its epicenter was located in the sea. The shaking was also reported in Guatemala.
