Havana, Cuba.- The analysis of the recent meteorite impact in Cuba and the information about a possible cosmic threat will be shared on Thursday during the public event ”Puertas Abiertas” (Open Doors) of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.
The scientists will comment on the report on meteorite mineralogy that erupted on February 1 in the sky of Viñales National Park, in the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio, and turned out to contain radioactive isotopes of potassium 40.
The study ‘Elemental characterization of the parts of the meteorite’ confirmed that the space object came from Vesta, the second body with more mass in the asteroid belt, orbiting around the Sun between Mars and Jupiter.
Experts predict the continued fall of these space rocks that could represent a cosmic threat to the Earth.
Fortunately, most of these burn to penetrate the atmosphere, which acts as a kind of shield and prevents that the impact energy of these asteroids is completely released on land as well as catastrophic consequences.
The Cuban Academy of Sciences hosts the third Thursday in each month these ‘Puertas Abiertas’ event at 10 o’clock, where those interested can participate as spectators and expose their doubts and knowledge in an open dialogue with participating scientists.
