Havana, Cuba.- Cuban health specialists on Thursday supported the country’s decision to withdraw its doctors from Brazil facing the contemptuous and threatening statements against them made by President-elect of that South American nation, Jair Bolsonaro.

This happens after five years of Cuban medical assistance in remote communities of Brazil.

This is a worthy decision, Dr. Fred Delgado told Prensa Latina, shortly after arriving at Jose Marti International Airport in Havana early Thursday from Brazil.

According to Delgado -specialist in Comprehensive General Medicine- there is no reason to accept questions about the principles and knowledge of Cuban doctors who have only brought welfare to millions of people in that country.

We are super happy to return to Cuba. Every time we arrive after completing our mission, we are filled with great joy, Delgado said after confirming his support to the Cuban Health Ministry’s decision in response to the statements made by President-elect Bolsonaro about the Cuban doctors.

That was also the opinion of Dr. Doraida Aldana, who, along with her colleagues, lamented the end of the agreement between Cuba and the Pan-American Health Organization that guaranteed the participation of Cuban health professionals in the ‘More Doctors’ program of Brazil.

Started in 2013, the initiative was mainly promoted by former Brazil’s President, Dilma Rousseff, in order to guarantee the presence of national and international doctors in poor and remote areas of the South American nation.
