Havana, Cuba.- The deputies of the National Assembly of the People’s Power (Parliament) of Cuba continue today the tasks for carrying out their duties during the 9th Legislature, which covers the period 2018-2023.

This is the second consecutive day of familiarization with legislative procedures and functions in the exercise of office, after the one held yesterday afternoon, during the first extraordinary session of the Legislature installed on April 18.

The deputies also heard an update on the functioning of the National Assembly, which on the island is the supreme body of power, and the Council of State, which represents the Parliament between one session and another.

Yesterday, the Assembly approved the 10 permanent work commissions for the 2018-2023 period and friendship groups with 93 countries.

In the topic that generated the most expectations, it activated a process of reform of the 1976 Constitution, in order to provide the country with a Magna Carta in accordance with the transformations underway to update the Cuban socialist model.

A total of 33 parliament members are part of the temporary committee created to draw up a preliminary draft of the new Constitution, which will be submitted to popular consultation, and then call on a referendum in which the nation decides on the matter.

The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raúl Castro, heads the working group, whose vice president is the head of state, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Diaz-Canel said yesterday at the plenary of MPs who approved the constitutional reform process that the new Magna Carta will take into account the principles of humanism and social justice prevailing in the island.

He also stressed that it will maintain the irrevocable pillar of the socialist system that the people of Cuba adopted in a sovereign manner in 2002 when the previous amendment to the Constitution was approved.

Tomorrow, the Cuban deputies who make up the 10 permanent commissions agreed yesterday will meet for the first time, a day in which several ministers will present parliament members the situation of the institutions and sectors they lead.
