Caracas, Venezuela.- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel pointed out today the democratic victory of the Venezuelan people in the elections of May 20, 2018 and its importance for Latin America.

When speaking at a solemn session of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), the Cuban leader praised the great day lived by the Venezuelans in the elections where President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected.

‘I bring a greeting from General Raul Castro, who celebrates with the people of Venezuela the democratic victory they experienced on May 20,’Diaz-Canel stated at a high sovereign forum of Venezuelans.

He stressed that the triumph of Chavism demonstrates the political growth of the people and shows the validity of the legacy of Commander Hugo Chavez.

‘This victory belongs to all Latin America,’ the Cuban President said adding that he fully believed that the Bolivarian Revolution would double in the elections despite the media campaign, the economic and financial war that US imperialism subdued to the Venezuelan people.

‘When they gave the results of Nicolas Maduro’s victory we felt it as our own. The island was happy for Venezuela and the Bolivarian Revolution; perhaps such fact bothered many in the United States and other borders of the right that is not able to recognize the legitimacy of a government elected by its people,’ Diaz-Canel highlighted.

He also thanked the support received from the Venezuelan people and the Bolivarian Government, after being appointed by the National Assembly of the Popular Power of Cuba, as Head of State of the Caribbean island.

The intervention of the Cuban leader was preceded by words from the president of the ANC, Delcy Rodriguez, who thanked the Government of Cuba for all its support to the Venezuelan people and referred in a special way to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who along with the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, Hugo Chavez, was in charge of strengthening the relationship between both nations.

Rodriguez also extended her gratitude to Cuba for accompanying Venezuela in moments of national and international attacks. ‘In front of great imperial threats against our people, here is a strengthened unity that will not allow defeat,’ she explained.

The leader of the popular parliament highlighted the support received by the people of Venezuela in health terms through the Barrio Adentro Mission, which has been operating in the country since 2003 thanks to Cuban collaborators.

She stressed that ‘they are the example of the new humanity. They are the example that another man is possible, that another woman is possible, supportive, loving who is there whenever the people of Venezuela have needed her. You are the soul of this binational cooperation between the people of Cuba and the people of Venezuela. ‘

Before the meeting at the ANC, Diaz-Canel paid tribute to the Liberator Simon Bolivar at the National Pantheon, where he was accompanied by the Executive Vice President of Venezuela, Tareck El Aissami and other government leaders.

There he greeted a broad representation of Cuban aid workers, mainly from the health sector.

The Cuban leader arrived in Venezuela on Wednesday morning and it is his first visit abroad since he was elected as President of the Council of State of Cuba, on April 19, a courtesy call that for many here demonstrates the close friendship between both peoples and governments.
