Havana, Cuba.-Cuba has advocated at the UN headquarters in Geneva to promote the development, dissemination and application of the norms and principles of international humanitarian law in a world where the nature of armed conflicts becomes more complex.

‘The strengthening of the International Humanitarian Law should contribute to respect the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the International Law, sovereignty, territorial integrity of the States, self-determination of peoples and non-intervention in their internal affairs,’ Claudia Perez, a counselor at the Havana embassy in Geneva, said.

The diplomat’s statement took place during the first formal meeting of the International Committee of the Red Cross on ‘Strengthening International Humanitarian Law protecting persons deprived of their liberty.’

According to the official, humanitarian ideals should not be manipulated in a selective or discriminatory manner to justify violations of the UN Charter and the International Law.

The Cuban representative stated that in order to find durable solutions to the currenty pressing humanitarian situations, its causes should be faced.

Among them she stated ‘the unjust international economic order; inequality, underdevelopment, marginalization and social exclusion; armed conflict and insecurity, among many others. ‘

‘All unilateral coercive measures, which are contrary to international law, and whose implementation has had negative impacts on the humanitarian situation of the countries against which they are used, should also be eliminated.’
