CATALONIA, Spain. – Carles Puigdemont, President of Catalonia, declined to expose to the Spanish Senate his rejection of the decision of Mariano Rajoy´s Government to take control of that region to curb the secessionist aspirations.

As a sign of the tense and changing situation generated by the serious territorial conflict, the independence leader would go in principle to the upper house to argue his opposition to the application in Catalonia of article 155 of the Constitution.

Instead, Puigdemont will attend an extraordinary plenary convened by the Legislative Assembly that will evaluate a response to Rajoy´s announcement to intervene the region.

On Friday, the Catalan chamber could debate a unilateral declaration of independence, in compliance with the outcome of the October 1 self-determination referendum, suspended by the Constitutional Court.
