Conversations in Havana on peace in Colombia.

HAVANA, Cuba.-The insurgent Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and the National Liberation Army reiterated today in Havana they will unite efforts to achieve peace in the South American country.

We hope to maintain a permanent joint dialogue mechanism for peace with social justice, both guerrilla organizations said in a joint communiqué read by Nicolas Rodriguez, from ELN and FARC, Timoleon Jimenez.

The text recognizes the policy sovereignty of both organizations, although it clarifies they have common objectives despite having traveled different but complementary paths.

Obstacles to Peace

The top leader of the National Liberation Army of Colombia, Nicolas Rodriguez, said he does not see a clear will of Juan Manuel Santos´ government to confront Paramilitarism, one of the most serious obstacles to achieve peace in the country.

The ELN commander recalled the number of leaders killed by the paramilitaries during previous processes, although he ratified his organization’s commitment to the end of the long and bloody military conflict.

On his part, the head of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Timoleon Jimenez, referred to the logistical problems faced by the demobilization of the FARC, although he admitted these are realities exceeding the parties´ will.

We will continue to stick it out for peace, the Colombian guerrilla commander said to ratify the FARC’s commitment to the end of the war.
