Havana, Cuba.-The Special Rapporteur of the United Nations (UN) on the human rights of Human Trafficking victims, especially women and children, Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, will begin today an official visit to Cuba.

According to the Foreign Ministry of this nation, Giammarinaro will meet in the Cuban capital and carry out other activities that will allow her to confirm Cuba’s commitment to the fulfillment of its international obligations in relation to human trafficking.

This country maintains a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ to this crime, with a focus on prevention, confrontation, and protection of victims.

The intense agenda of the UN representative includes visits to educational and counseling institutions for women and the family, meetings with ministers of justice, tourism and foreign affairs, as well as with the Attorney General of the Republic.

At the end of her visit, on April 14, Giammarinaro is expected to hold a press conference.

On March 30, representatives of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations Office in Geneva handed over to Giammarinaro the National Action Plan to the Prevent and Combat Human Trafficking and protection of victims for the period 2017-2020.

This document reaffirms the commitment to compliance with the protocol to prevent, suppress and punish human trafficking, especially women and children, in accordance with the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.

It also expresses the will to fulfill other obligations assumed in the field of human rights and in the prevention and confrontation of crime.
