United Nations, New York.- The Government of Namibia highlighted on Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly Cuba’s help in obtaining its independence and called for an end to the U.S. blockade on Cuba.

Namibian President Mage Geingob stressed Cuba’s help in obtaining freedom in 1990 and criticized the US blockade on that nation, which has been going on for more than 50 years.

During the darkest days of our struggle for independence, the government and people of Cuba came to our aid, spilling their blood for our liberation, the president declared.

Geingob added that as a result of the decisive fight of Cuito Cuanavale in 1988, negotiations, elections and finally the freedom of Namibia were achieved.

It is in this spirit of deep friendship that we decided to renew our call for the lifting of Cuba’s old, antiquated, inefficient and counterproductive economic and financial blockade, he said.

The Head of State also called for peace, in the spirit of equality and sustainability, to make the United Nations relevant to everyone.

Let us have this unique moment in history,’ concluded Geingob, who also had words of praise for the late Kofi Annan and reviewed his country’s recent achievements.

The search for greater inclusion of women, scientific advances and support for young people were among the aspects mentioned, and he pointed to the prevalence of diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS as his main challenge.
