Voñales.PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba. – Famous for its mogotes and country views, Viñales could become the first Cuban scene distinguished with the title of the World Geopark, a distinction that would add attractions to the picturesque town.

The director of the National Park in this area, Mario Alberto Sanchez, said such recognition would enhance the geomorphological diversity of the zone, where curious mountain formations appear among the oldest in Cuba.

Sanchez added that a team of scholars currently elaborates the dossier or documentation required to argue the proposal, backed by institutions such as the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The title of the World Geopark is granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to Viñales, which has abundant caves where it is possible to find traces of Aboriginal communities.
