SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba. – Army Corps General Joaquin Quintas Sola highlighted this Wednesday the importance of watching over the state of the Cuban reservoirs after the accumulated left by Hurricane Irma in the central zone and the persisting rains.

During a tour of Sancti Spiritus, the head of the Strategic Region of the Center was interested in the situation of the largest Cuban reservoir, the Zaza Dam, which began to alleviate this Wednesday after almost four years without opening its floodgates.

Quintas Sola recognized the relevance of monitoring this reservoir and creating the conditions in case it is necessary to evacuate again the thousands of people living downstream of Zaza River´s riverbed.

At the beginning of alleviation, the Zaza Dam accumulated more than 90 percent of its capacity, a surprising figure since this year the largest reservoir in the country was at its lowest level in the last three decades.
