Love Letters

If during the courtship stage, when young Ignacio Agramonte studied or worked in Havana and his beloved Amalia remained in Port-au-Prince, the exchange epistolary was intense, during the war it reaches a transcendence that endures by its overflowing love and patriotism.

“Amalia of my life, you are my only delight, I don´t love no one as I love you. Never doubt it. I feel so blessed loving you and being the object of your love.” Fragments like this show the Major´s passionate devotion to the woman who was her raison d’être.

The missives of his wife were not less intense, she had to migrate to New York, where his daughter Herminia was born and learned about Agramonte´s death in Jimaguayu.

Amalia died in Havana on January 23, 1918. Her remains lie in the city where she was born.
