Violence in Congo.

UNITED NATIONS, New York. – Jean-Pierre Lacroix, undersecretary general of the United Nations for peacekeeping operations, noted this Tuesday that the Democratic Republic of the Congo faces political and security challenges that threaten to perpetuate violence.

In a session of the Security Council dedicated to analyze the situation in the African country, the official pointed out that the agreement signed last December to overcome the political crisis remains unimplemented fully.

Lacroix said that in the current Congolese scenario, the parties and the international community´s commitment is essential, with the fulfillment of the pact guaranteeing a peaceful transition after the culmination of President Joseph Kabila’s second term.

The undersecretary general of the United Nations for peacekeeping operations indicated that no less troubling is the continuation of violence in Western and Eastern areas of the country, especially in the Kasai provinces.
