Havana, Cuba.- The Havana historian, Eusebio Leal, highlighted today the mark left by the fighters for the independence of Cuba in the great educational work of the Caribbean country.

If we can meet today, it is thanks to those who are neither forgotten nor dead, assured the outstanding intellectual in the ceremony for the beginning of the school year 2018-2019, headed by the Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel.

In the activity, which became a tribute to the national hero Jose Marti (1853-1895) and his teacher Rafael Maria de Mendive (1821-1886), Leal mentioned as the architects of that achievement the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raul Castro.

He also expressed his gratitude to the workers and designers who worked on the repair of the former San Pablo school, where Jose Marti studied, now Rafael Maria de Mendive Elementary School, which was re-inaugurated at the event.

‘To you, teachers, to the people of Old Havana, gathered together here today, for your moral support, without which our work would not be possible,’ said Leal.

Previously, he masterfully outlined historical passages of the friendship relation between Marti and Mendive, as well as the influence of the distinguished master in the formation of the patriotic values ​​of the Apostle.

Those present recognized the Office of the Historian of the capital for the remodeling of the school, former San Pablo school, which retains its colonial structure and some of the furniture of the nineteenth century used by Mendive.

In the current school year, more than 10,000 teaching centers opened their doors for about two million students.
