Havana, Cuba.- Students at the University of Havana (UH) ratified Thursday their support for the new Cuban Constitution because of its democratic and inclusive character, a Magna Carta that will be submitted to a referendum on February 24.

Indira Alonso, a third-year journalism student at the Faculty of Communication, told Prensa Latina that the new generations are committed to a law that is adapted to their time and is the fruit of popular debate.

According to Alonso, in the emblematic high school in Havana a debate over the draft was held in the brigades of each faculty, in which the students had the opportunity to expose their criteria with additions, suppressions or eliminations in the constitutional draft.

Nearly nine million Cubans, including thousands of university students, participated in the consultation held in neighborhoods and workplaces from Aug 13 to Nov 15 to enrich the draft elaborated by a parliamentary commission.

The document approved on December 22 in the National Assembly of People’s Power was built from these opinions. This document will be submitted in 10 days to a ratification referendum for which more than eight million Cubans are called.

Raul Escalona, a third-year student of journalism, said that with the new constitution Cuba keeps the Martiano precept so important in our days ‘with all and for the good of all’, and also represents a version improved by the people, who during the consultation made more than 780,000 proposals.

Carmen Hernandez, a fourth-year sociology student at the Faculty of Philosophy and History, said the Constitution reflects the current international context and the political, economic and social conditions of a country engaged in a process of updating its sustainable development. The Constitution responds to changes in society, such as the incorporation of a new chapter on families’, Hernandez told Prensa Latina.

The Constitution also includes changes in the structure of the State, the extension of rights and guarantees, the recognition of various forms of property, including the private one, and the encouragement of foreign investment, ratifying Cuba´s socialist character and the lead role of the Communist Party in its society.
