Pretoria, South Africa.- Veteran anti-apartheid fighter and former government minister Ronnie Kasrils has condemned this Tuesday US President Donald Trump’s administration for its new aggressions against Cuba, which he considered a belligerent act that threatens free-market legality around the world.

This is another desperate action that will be rejected by ‘the heroic Cuban people and will strengthen global solidarity with the island’, the former South African Minister of State Security (2004-2008) told Prensa Latina.

His comments referred to the application by Trump’s administration of Title III of the Helms Burton Act, which tightens sanctions against Cuba.

Trump’s government is still threatening progress and peace by meddling in Cuba’s sovereign rights and using counterproductive blockade measures and sanctions in an attempt to force its will, he said.

The former South African leader assured that the world has been on Cuba’s side and its people in the 46 years since the establishment of the Helms Burton law and the enforcement of the blockade since the first years of the Revolution.

Kasrils, an active fighter against the apartheid regime, has been a member of the Communist Party and African National Congress (ANC) since the 1960s and was one of the founders of the armed wing of that liberation movement known as Umkhonto we Sizwe, whose central command in the Natal region he headed in 1963.

Since the rise of democracy in South Africa in 1994, with the elimination of the racial segregation regime, Kasril held a number of public posts, first as Deputy Minister of Defence during the government of Nelson Mandela and later as Minister of Water Resources and Intelligence until 2008.
