Quito, Ecuador.- The Ecuadorean pro-government political group, Alianza PAIS, on Thursday condemned the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for almost six decades.

‘Our Movement, loyal to its principles, condemns this measure that for almost 60 years has sought to suffocate Cuba’s economic and social development, affecting the welfare of its people and its national economy,’ the group said in a statement.

The text stated that it is a progressive movement, a defender of rights, freedoms, equal opportunities, social justice and the development of peoples within a framework of respect for international law.

Alianza PAIS recalled that the United Nations General Assembly will again vote on a resolution proposed by Cuba: ‘Necessity to end the economic, financial and commercial blockade of the United States against Cuba’.

‘We reaffirm our solidarity and support for the people and the Government of Cuba in their persevering battle, which for 26 years has been approved by the United Nations, to put an end to the blockade and to defend their right to self-determination,’ the statement concluded.

With its communiqué, Alianza PAIS joined more than a dozen political and social organizations that have raised their voices in strong condemnation of Washington’s siege.

The Andean Parliament, the parliamentary caucus of the Citizens’ Revolution, the Ecuador-Cuba Friendship and Solidarity Coordinating Committee and the Communist Party of Ecuador are some of the organizations that have expressed support for the people and the government of Cuba.

Today, the General Assembly will vote on the Cuban text for the 26th consecutive year, when it has received the majority’s support at the United Nations.

In 2017, 191 of 193 UN member States voted in favor of the Cuban resolution. Only the United States and Israel spoke out against the proposal to put an end to the US policy, which has caused losses to Cuba for almost 60 years that are estimated at 933.678 billion dollars.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, in the period between April 2017 and March 2018, the US blockade has caused losses estimated at about 4,321,200,000 dollars.
