Bogota, Colombia.- Colombia has sent about 15 tons of humanitarian aid to the affected people in Cuba as a result of Hurricane Irma.
According to an official note spread here today, an aircraft from the Colombian Armed Forces brought the aid consisting of food, blankets and hygiene articles, which was delivered to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Donor Executing Agency.
This was also expressed by Colombia’s ambassador to Cuba, Araceli Morales, who led the South American delegation of solidarity, along with the director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, Carlos Ivan Marquez.
Raciel Proenza, an official from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, thanked the Colombian government and people for their solidarity.
The Cubans are very united in the effort to restore the country from the damages caused by Hurricane Irma, Proenza said.
At the same time, a solidarity campaign is underway in Colombia to promote economic aid to the Cuban people following the disasters caused by Irma.
With the purpose of contributing to compensate the enormous damages caused by the meteorological phenomenon, a bank account has been made at the BBVA bank, where Colombian citizens in solidarity with the island make their deposits.
The path of hurricane Irma caused enormous material damages and killed 10 people in the Caribbean nation, now immersed in an intense recovery work.
In addition to the aid to Cuba, Colombia also made a monetary donation to Antigua and Barbuda and another donation to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund.
The Colombian Foreign Ministry is also coordinating the sending of humanitarian assistance to Mexico through experts in rescue work.
