Mexico City, Mexico.-A group of Mexican Mayan peasants have come to Cuba today to exchange agro-ecological practices, according to a statement by Aleira Lara, head of the Greenpeace Agriculture Campaign.

The members of the Mayan community will arrive on the island aboard the Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior, which is making its first voyage to the Caribbean nation.

During their five-day visit, peasants from Campeche and Yucatan will visit the Indio Hatuey Experimental Station, the Institute for Basic Research in Tropical Agriculture (INIFAT) and the National Program for Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture.

In her statement Lara said, ‘Cuba has been a worldwide benchmark in organic farming. There are thousands of successful cases on the island of different agricultural models, where food is grown free of pesticides. The models have proved to be a viable alternative for low-cost food production, protecting health and preserving basic resources such as water, soil and energy.’
