HAVANA, Cuba. – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba strongly rejects the disrespectful statement of the United States Department of State, awarded to Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, which seeks to question the constitutional referendum freely and sovereignly celebrated by the Cubans on February 24.

The text of the statement is an expression of the imperialist thought deeply rooted in the foreign policy of the current United States government. It is also a reflection of the pretension already announced to impose again the Monroe doctrine in the Western Hemisphere, now accompanied by McCarthyism intolerance.

The Cuban people spoke loud and clear on February 24, with a forceful eloquence. They bet freely at polls for the construction of Socialism and did so by going massively to express their will, despite the pernicious campaign of the United States Government aimed at influencing the vote. It has been a long time since Cubans have cut off any American claim to govern the fates of our country.

The Department of State must cease the practice of meddling in the internal affairs of other States and interfering with the electoral or voting processes of other nations. It is a mania contrary to international law, with which the United States government defies the rules governing relations between sovereign States.
