Havana, Cuba.- The Cuban National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) will begin the constitutive session of its IX Legislature this day, when the President, Vice President and Secretary of the supreme body of State power will also be elected.

The event will take place at the Havana Conventions Center with the presence of the 605 deputies who will make up the new mandate of the Assembly, which will last for the next five years, and from whom the legislative body will be elected.

In accordance with the provisions of Act No. 72, Electoral Law, the president of the National Nominations Commission presents to the deputies the proposals for the top positions of the ANPP, and bases each one of them.

The legal body itself states that those present are consulted if they wish to replace, or not, one or more of the proposed candidates, and that the replacement of members of the candidacy can only be agreed by a favorable vote of the majority.

Subsequently, the draft nominations are submitted for approval and, once this step has been completed, a direct and secret ballot cast is held, in which the National Electoral Commission takes part, announcing the results and declaring elected those who have obtained more than 50 per cent of the cast valid votes.

Elected officials take office immediately, as stated in Article 142 of the Law.

Currently, the highest positions in the ANPP are filled by Esteban Lazo Hernández as President, while Ana María Mari Machado and Miriam Brito Sarroca serve as Vice President and Secretary of the legislative body, respectively.

As part of the constituent session of the new legislature of the ANPP, the members of the Council of State, its President, First Vice-President, Vice-Presidents and Secretary will also be elected.
