Vienna, Austria.-Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), welcomed today Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), at the United Nations headquarters here.
At the meeting, held during the IAEA International Conference on Technical Cooperation, attended by Perez as a special guest, the two parties shared views on their close cooperation.
They highlighted Cuba’s results in the use of nuclear technologies in key areas for development.
Amano thanked Perez for her presence at the Conference, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Technical Cooperation Program, while acknowledging Cuba’s contribution and excellent results, assessed during his two visits to the country.
Perez reiterated Cuba’s willingness to continue working towards the common goal of making true the current IAEA logo ‘Atoms for Peace and Development’ while being sustainable for all peoples.
Amano has been IAEA Director General since 2009 and previously chaired the IAEA’s Board of Governors (2005-2006).
IAEA was created in 1957 and Cuba is a founding country member, implementing the first technical cooperation project in 1977.
Perez, who arrived in Vienna on May 28th, was welcomed today by Pr. Dr. Anton Zeilinger, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, with whom she assessed bilateral ties, particularly the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2015, in force until 2020.
