Havana, Cuba.- The National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba paid tribute today to the 112 people who lost their lives on May 18 in an air disaster which mourned the Caribbean country and generated international solidarity.

Lawmakers of the 9th Legislature of the Parliament of the island observed a minute’s silence to remember those killed in the tragedy involving a Boeing 737-200 rented by Cubana de Aviación, in which 113 human beings, 102 Cubans, seven Mexicans (including the six crew members), two Argentines and two Saharawi living on the island were travelling.

The president of the Assembly in its IX Legislature, Esteban Lazo, reminded all Cuban people united in deep sorrow and expressed their sincere condolences to the families and friends of the Cuban and foreign victims.

Lazo also expressed his gratitude for the expressions of solidarity that came from all over the world.

The Boeing 737-200 of the Mexican company Damojh crashed a few minutes after it took off from the José Martí International Airport in the capital, an accident in which three women survived, but only one – 19-year-old Mailén Diaz – is still alive, reported as critical.

Cuban authorities, supported by experts from the United States and Mexico, are investigating the causes of the disaster.
