UNITED NATIONS, New York. – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres regretted this Thursday the American decision to withdraw from the Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), and assured that it will continue working with that country.

In statements to the press, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterres, noted that in the relationship between the United Nations and the Member States, differences arise sometimes.

The State Department notified this Thursday the decision of UNESCO’s departure from what it described as the trend against Israel in that forum, as well as to mention its concerns with arrears of payments and the need for a fundamental reform.

Washington argued it is not a step lightly, although it is expected that it will generate criticism, as happened when the White House opted a few months ago to abandon the Paris climate agreement, among other decisions.
