UNITED NATIONS, New York.- The President of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, reaffirmed in the United Nations (UN) the commitment of his continent with the defense of the ideals of peace and tolerance promoted by Nelson Mandela.

Mahamat, one of the first to intervene at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit at UN headquarters in New York, highlighted the need to work together to ensure peace in Africa.

The high African official urged to continue Mandela’s legacy, and asserted they are an inspiration for service to humanity, based on principles of freedom, justice, equality, tolerance and reconciliation.

The President of the African Union recalled that Madiba opened the way to independence. For this reason, in recognition of his life, which serves as an example for the contemporaries and those who will come, the UN, in December 2017, declared the date of his birth as the International Day of Nelson Mandela.
