Havana, Cuba.- With the participation of Juan Carlos Camaño, president of the Latin American Federation of Jornalists (FELAP), Cuba celebrated today the World Press Freedom Day.

Workers of this field held a meeting today at the headquarters of the Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) to discuss Latin American situation and pay tribute to the missing, killed and tortured journalists in the region.

According to Camaño the main focus of the battle should be placed on the social networks, ‘freedom of expression must target the proper context, in which political discussion and ideological message move increasingly into entertainment field’, he said.

A tribute was paid to Ecuadorean journalist Carlos Bastidas Argüello, the last journalist killed in Cuba by the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1958.

The meeting, chaired also by UPEC President of Honor Tubal Paez and Aixa Hevia, first vice president of UPEC, was attended by communication workers and Cuban award-winners of the National Award of Journalism.

World Day Freedom Press was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, according to the draft recommendation of the 26th meeting of UNESCO’s General Conference, held in 1991.
