UNITED NATIONS, New York. – The United Nations announced this Monday the approval of a $10 billion fund for humanitarian assistance in Northeast Nigeria, a zone hit by terrorist group Boko Haram.

According to the organization, more than eight million people need help in that Nigerian area, particularly in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, the most affected territories.

In recent years, Boko Haram has represented a lethal presence in the northeast of the African country and in neighboring nations of Lake Chad Basin and they are attributed thousands of murders and kidnappings, as well as the forced displacement of millions of people.

In 2012, several countries in the area began to direct efforts to a multinational Joint Task Force to neutralize Boko Haram, although the group continues to be a strong threat.
