HAVANA, Cuba. – Cuba welcomed this Friday the adoption of a treaty banning nuclear weapons by the United Nations, which it described as an historic landmark.

With this treaty, the international community makes it clear that nuclear weapons are not only inhuman, immoral and ethically indefensible. From now on, they will also be illegal, Cuban Ambassador Rodolfo Benitez said.

The diplomat affirmed that the instrument supported at the United Nations by most of the countries voting on its adoption has Cuba´s categorical support.

Benitez remarked that the agreement fulfills two main objectives: it establishes a new standard for categorical prohibition of nuclear weapons, and provides a solid framework for their destruction and total elimination.
