Firefighters have an honorable mission.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba. – A sculpture dedicated to Major Luis Ponciano Alvarez Valdes, the most long-lived active Cuban firefighter, was made in the city of Santiago de Cuba and it will be transferred to Havana.

The life-size piece by outstanding artist Jose Rolando Montero Hernandez, from Holguin, is made of copper using electroplating and embossing techniques.

Montero Hernandez pointed out the sculpture is a tribute to those who save lives, and highlighted the contribution of other creators of the Luis Diaz Oduardo Cultural workshop, in Vista Alegre neighborhood, where the piece was made.

Firefighter Luis Ponciano Alvarez Valdes fulfilled multiple missions such as the extinction of the fires La Coubre ship, as well as in El Encanto Department Store and Le Van Tan daily care center in Havana.
