Cuban President Visits Island of Youth.

NUEVA GERONA, Cuba.- The President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, visits Island of Youth Special Municipality, affected by Hurricane Michael in recent days.

Accompanied by ministerial authorities and of the territory, when visiting the Electric Company knew about the recovery of electricity services after the passage of the cyclone. The affectations were solved in less than 72 hours, what was commended by Diaz-Canel.

He also was interested in port and fishing activities and asked on the capacity of operation of this harbor, that is the main way of access to the municipality of resources for economy and development.

It was explained that one of the fundamental problems in the transport of maritime cargo lies in tugboats, and it was anticipated that a new one will be rented that will help to alleviate the situation with cargo.

Pescaisla Industrial Fishing Company was another of the places Diaz-Canel visited this Friday, where he knew that the plans of capture and flake in platform are overfulfilled, as well as exportable items like lobster and sea cucumber.

Prioritized Attention to Affected Families

In his tour of Island of Youth Special Municipality, the President of the Councils of State and Ministers verified the capacity of producing materials for the construction of houses.

He learned that in addition to the nearly 400 families affected by previous natural events living in temporary facilities, there are 153 multi-family buildings with leaks, 32 of them in a critical condition.

Diaz-Canel called to prioritize the attention to the people living in these buildings, and also to find a definitive solution for the families residing in the so-called temporary facilities.

The President’s tour of the Island of Youth began with Captain Lawton Basic Unit of Cooperative Production, where he appreciated the banana planting system and commended the cleanliness and health of the plants.
