Havana, Cuba.- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced on Wednesday the extreme and unprecedented pressure exerted by the United States on sovereign nations to change their votes regarding the upcoming presentation of a report on the U.S. blockade, scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th and Wednesday, the 28th.
During a press conference held Wednesday morning, Bruno Rodríguez explained that this will mark the 34th time the United Nations General Assembly examines the report titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”
He noted that the discussion is taking place against a backdrop of an unprecedented intensification of this policy, as well as an “energy siege” that he described as a form of collective punishment against the Cuban people.
Cuba’s foreign minister highlighted that, despite pressure from Washington, this will be the first time the General Assembly issues a resolution explicitly condemning the extreme tightening of the blockade.
He stated that this year has seen a convergence of an intensified economic siege, political coercion, and the obstruction of trade and supplies destined for Cuba — all accompanied by an unusual level of activity by the U.S. State Department.
Bruno Rodríguez presented documents evidencing efforts made by the United States over the last few months to influence the positions of various countries—actions often carried out by Secretary of State Marco Rubio himself.
Among the materials displayed was a document from the aforementioned department urging foreign governments to reject “Cuban propaganda.”
According to the foreign minister, the text attempts to hold the Cuban government responsible for the humanitarian consequences resulting from the blockade. “These damages are not collateral — as Washington often claims — but rather the deliberate consequences of a policy designed to inflict suffering, despair, and instability upon Cuban families,” he maintained.
The head of Cuban diplomacy also referred to another document, addressed to foreign dignitaries, which contains explicit threats of sanctions and urges them to carefully consider the consequences of supporting the Cuban resolution. Such measures could be directed against governments, companies, or individuals.
He further mentioned a third document, circulated in Europe, which attempts to justify the pressure exerted on Cuba by alleging links between the island and the conflict in Ukraine — an accusation that, he stated, has already been refuted.
According to Bruno Rodríguez, these pressure tactics include threats to suspend cooperation programs, visa restrictions for officials and their family members, interference in electoral processes, the encouragement of destabilizing activities, and potential harm to economic and financial interests.
The island’s foreign minister also condemned the “farce” staged on October 19 at United Nations facilities, which involved mercenaries linked to actions against Cuba.
He added that these maneuvers are intended to divert the attention of the U.S. public—the majority of whom oppose the blockade, as do many Cubans residing in the United States.
Rodríguez also expressed his gratitude for the support shown by social movements, solidarity organizations, and progressive sectors that are calling for an end to the sanctions and defending Cuba’s right to live in peace.
Furthermore, the top Cuban diplomat expressed his confidence that the international community will once again overwhelmingly support the Cuban resolution, even though there will always be lackeys who serve the interests of Washington.
