HAVANA, Cuba. – On March 21, the process of consultation of the newly elected delegates to the provincial Assemblies of People’s Power was completed throughout Cuba, with respect to the nominations to be presented next Sunday 25 for presidents and vice-Presidents, at the constituent session of those governing bodies.

The President of the National Candidacy Commission, Gisela Duarte, said that more than 99 percent of the 1 265 provincial delegates were consulted.

Duarte explained it was not possible to contact those who, for reasons of work, were out of the country, and remarked that this general election also becomes a democratic process.

Gisela Duarte argued that this period of consultation is led by the Candidacy commissions at the provincial level, through the creation of working teams.

Cuban Electoral System Strengths

In dialogue with Radio Reloj, the president of the National Candidacy Commission, Gisela Duarte, explained how it will be the constitutive session of the Provincial Assemblies of People´s Power next Sunday.

She pointed out that the provincial delegates take up office, take an oath, and elect the President and Vice-President of those governing bodies, once the candidacy is presented and approved.

Duarte said the vote is secret, scrutiny is made by the Provincial Electoral Commission, and it is the president announces the result and declares elected to the President and Vice President of the Provincial Assembly, provided they have obtained more than 50 percent of valid votes.
