CARACAS, Venezuela.- The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, recalled the new anniversary of the Caracazo, a civil insurrection against the measures announced during the Carlos Andres Perez Administration, in 1989.
Through his
Twitter account, Maduro recalled the action: On February 27, the Venezuelan people broke the chains of imperialist
domination that underwent it for a century; in the streets it was forged the
popular rebel soul that cries today Oligarchs
will not return!
The protests, ended on March 8th that year, were the result of the neoliberal
adjustments of President Carlos Andres Perez, mainly in the Venezuelan capital.
As a result, the government militarized the country and constitutional guarantees were suspended, and repression turned into a massacre. The first deaths were reported since the same February 27.
