BRAZILIA, Brazil. – The Supreme Court of Brazil decides whether or not it is necessary to have the authorization of the legislature so that the judiciary can apply precautionary measures against parliamentarians.

The trial in the Supreme Federal Court responds to a direct action of unconstitutionality interposed by the Progressive and Social Christian parties, which claim that in such cases the application of sanctions is consulted with the National Congress.

The demand from both groups was presented after the first Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court suspended senator and former presidential candidate Aecio Neves from its legislative functions last September; he is charged with corruption and obstruction of justice.

Neves was also forbidden of leaving his home at night, traveling abroad and communicating with colleagues related to the case.
