United States.- The US Energy Department declared an emergency following the collapse of a portion of a tunnel containing radioactive material, in a nuclear production complex in Hanford, Washington state.
Randy Bradbury, a spokesperson for the state’s Ecology Department, reported that there was apparently no radiation release and no worker was injured.
However, they evacuated the staff of the nearest facilities, and instructed other workers of the complex to stay inside the buildings and avoid ingesting food or beverages, according to internal communications obtained by local media.
The cause of the incident has not been enlightened, but it is believed that the radioactive waste storage site would have collapsed because of the vibration of an excavation carried out as part of some work on a nearby highway.
