HRAN, Iran. – On 19 May, more than 55 million Iranians are summoned to participate in the twelfth presidential election since the country became an Islamic republic.
The event is of great international importance, because it is the first elections of that kind since the international agreement on the Iranian nuclear program of 2015 was signed.
More than a thousand people registered their candidacies to Iran´s presidency; however, the Council of Guardians of the Constitution, a special body formed by religious representatives and Islamic jurists, reduced the final candidates to six.
The current president of Iran, reformist Hassan Rohani, is seen as the favorite to win the election, although its main competitor, conservative Ibrahim Raisí, has garnered important support during the campaign.
