Havana, Cuba.-Cuba”s permanent representative to the United Nations office in Geneva, Anayansi Rodriguez Camejo, has defended the need to preserve multilateralism with regards to international relations, diplomatic sources reported today.

Her comments came during the preparatory meeting of the 5th Review Conference of the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons, weapons which are deemed to be excessively harmful or which do not discriminate in their targets.

‘Preserving multilateralism in international relations, based on strict respect for the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, is necessary today more than ever,’ the Caribbean island’s ambassador said.

‘Cuba recognizes the importance of disarmament and arms control in the field of conventional weapons, particularly weapons of mass destruction,’ she continued.

Rodriguez Camejo stated that Havana is opposed to the double standards of some countries, who ‘while boosting the manufacture and use of new increasingly sophisticated conventional weapons try to limit certain types of conventional weapons, including small and light weapons.’

The diplomat also noted that the Caribbean nation strictly complies with its commitments under the convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
