Camagüey, Cuba.- Archaeological studies are today one of the main attractions of this central-eastern region of Cuba, with great cultural bastions.

In a city whose historic center was declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity, ‘ tourist motivations are focused on the enormous historical wealth, and excavations like those in the Martí Park attract a lot of attention’, expressed director of the Archeology Cabinet, Iván Mora.

A high percentage of visitors to the region, especially North Americans, Canadians, French and Russians, leading emission markets, ‘arrive at spaces like these public excavations where specialists from the Office of the Historian (OHCC) explain visitors are filled in on history of the locality, ‘Mora added.

Precisely to expand the knowledge of Archeology, the University of Camagüey, one of the leading academic references in the country, includes the career of Heritage Management, ‘because encouraging these studies is a way to save Cuban culture,’ said the director of the OHCC, Jose Rodriguez.

The house of high studies, first founded by the Cuban Revolution, recently experienced the exchange with a delegation of the Benemérita Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP), the International Meeting of Architecture, Design and Urbanism for Tourism.

In addition to corroborating the academic advances of both institutions, visitors can learn about the important field of research, ‘and that is vital to preserve the identity of the nation, admired by all who visit us,’ added Rodriguez.

In order to promote archeology as a source for the management of research and the processing thereof, the OHCC convened in 2018 the International Workshop on Historical and Archaeological Studies in Urban Contexts, which was attended by prestigious specialists.

The most recent precedents of excavation in the territory of Camagüey date from 2012 with the collaboration of the Spanish Agency for Development, allowed to find details of the founding space of the Villa, in Punta del Guincho, to the north, in the present municipality of Nuevitas.
