WASHINGTON, United States.-The historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, was always willing to have better relations with the United States, but without jeopardizing the sovereignty of the island, knowledgeable persons of the bilateral links highlighted this Tuesday in Washington.

A panel moderated by Cuban ambassador Jose Ramon Cabañas, and composed of Americans who talked with the revolutionary leader, recalled various ways in which Fidel sought a rapprochement and privileged the links with the American people.

Gail Walker, executive director of the Pastors for Peace Foundation, highlighted the altruistic nature of the social process in Cuba and the support provided to countries on various continents.

Julia Sweig, an expert in Latin American studies, recalled that on several occasions she saw the revolutionary leader discussing with some of his strongest critics on Cuba-related issues.
