Regions of southern Brazil want to be independent.
BRAZILIA, Brazil. – The South is My Country Movement made an informal plebiscite to consult the inhabitants of the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana, in southern Brazil, on the possibility of independence from the national territory.
Until this Monday, 85.8 percent of the polls had been posted, and the results showed that the overwhelming majority of voters supported the yes, according to 2017 Plebisul official web site.
The vote is of a symbolic nature so it has no legal value; however, participants were invited to sign a proposal to be taken to the Congress and to discuss the issue.
On her part, the coordinator of The South is My Country Movement, Anidria Rocha, said the separatist movement is growing increasingly and the political and economic crisis in Brazil favors that position.
