General elections in Cuba.

HAVANA, Cuba.- The National Electoral Commission reported as the final result that 85.65 per cent of the total of voters exercised their right to vote in the general suffrages held last March 11.

During that day more than 7 399 000 Cubans and Cuban participated, according to an official note.

Alina Balseiro, president of the National Electoral Commission, informed the following day of the elections that the 605 candidates for members to the National Assembly of People’s Power had been elected, by reaching more than half of the valid votes cast, according what the law establishes.

After the election was completed and the preliminary results were informed, the electoral commission continued working to conclude the information generated on the day of elections.

Final report of the Commission

The preliminary results and the compatibility of the data with the register of voters allowed to avoid the repetitions in that document.

Inclusions carried out in each school were taken into account, especially as to the exceptional voter registrations that exercised the right to vote in a different school than that they were registered; deceased people were also excluded.

In summary, 94.42 percent of ballots deposited at the ballot boxes were declared valid in meeting the requirements established by law, which is higher than that recorded in the first stage of that process.

The National Electoral Commission highlighted the work done by the electoral authorities at all levels, as well as the decisive collaboration of the organizations in the territories and especially the participation of the people.

On the Constitution of the Provincial Assemblies

In accordance with the provisions of the Council of State, the provincial Assemblies of People’s Power will be constituted on March25, after the 1 265 delegates were elected throughout the country.

During these events, the President and Vice-President of the governing bodies in the respective territories shall be elected by secret ballot.

To hold that meeting more than half of the total number of newly elected delegates is required, who will be sworn in as faithful servants of the people and the community.

All sectors of the society are represented in the delegates of the provincial Assemblies of People´s Power, which will have their constituent session next Sunday 25.
