Havana, Cuba.- A report from Cuban authorities on the hydric situation says that the rainy season (May-October) closed with a national average of 77 percent of the total filling capacity of dams.

This figure is equivalent to 9,129 million cubic meters in 242 dams, Juventud Rebelde newspaper reported.

Only one province, Havana, has less than 50 percent of its total capacity. Of 100 main underground basins, about 97 are in normal condition and three in the eastern regions of Camagüey are in an unfavorable state, the publication says.

The report states that the dry period for Cuba is from November to April. About 20 percent of the annual rainfall average is reported in this period.

The climatic prospects for these six months, issued by the Climate Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) says that the period will be slightly warm and with few rains.

There is a 60-percent chance that the weather phenomenon known as La Niña in the Equatorial Pacific will develop during this stage.

The Climate Center report explains that from November to January over the past tne years, rainfalls were below normal in all regions of the country, while from February to April, rains are close to normal in most of the national territory.

The experts carried out an in-depth study of the problems caused by the drought that affected Cuba in 2017, with concerning implication for the national economy.
