Healthy corals in Cuban reefs.

HAVANA, Cuba. – New species, reservoirs of invasive lionfish, Mackerel shoals with commercial value, and healthy corals were some of the findings of the first expedition made by Cuban and American scientists, who traveled through Cuba for a month.

Dr. Dorka Cobian, one of the biologists aboard the Walton Smith ship who measured the island´s perimeter explained, we had never been able to observe the reefs more than fifty or sixty meters as we could do with this technology.

The preliminary results, in the hands of the American and Cuban scientists, were an attraction in the 11th International Convention on Environment and Development this Tuesday.

For the experts it constituted an achievement of the thaw policy initiated in 2014 by Barack Obama and his counterpart Raul Castro.
