Havana, Cuba.- Bay of Pigs victory in April 1961 encourages and inspires Cuba to resist the escalation of U.S. hostility, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Thursday.

A few hours before the 58th anniversary of the victory in less than three days over a mercenary invasion organized by Washington, and just a few hours after the White House announced new measures to tighten the economic blockade, the Cuban President said on Twitter that Cubans will remain faithful to the historic legacy of Bay of Pigs.

The 58th anniversary of Bay of Pigs’ victory motivates and inspires us. Loyal to its historical legacy, Cuba and the Cuban Revolution reiterate their firm determination to face and prevail against the aggressive escalation of the United States’, he said on the social media, which has 118,000 followers.

Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday strengthened the blockade imposed almost 60 years ago, with the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, a chapter that advocates economic suffocation as a tool for change of regime.

He also said he would increase travel restrictions for United States citizens to Cuba and limit remittances sent by Cubans residing in the United States to their families.

Cuban government, in a statement repudiated the White House aggressiveness and called on the international community to curb its imperial ambitions.
