Hanoi, Vietnam.- Cuba is promoting actions to foster the greatest possible unity of the Latin American and Caribbean revolutionaries facing the new neoliberal offensive led by the United States and its allies, a senior leader of the Caribbean nation said here today.

Jose Ramon Balaguer, head of the International Relations department at the Cuban Communist Party (PCC), said this statement during the opening session of a theoretical seminar with officials of a similar organization in Vietnam, where he talked about some aspects of the situation in that region.

Washington’s prioritized goal is to overthrow the left-wing and progressive executives, for which they have improved some subversion methods and used mistakes committed by political forces in government functions, he stated.

Balaguer said that plan also seeks to break the integration processes that took shape in the last 15 years, from the Union of South American Nations to the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

He added that the perception that obliges to assess the risks and causes of recent setbacks grows on the left, but the objective is taking back the initiative, which he described as important.

These aspects are observed in Argentina and Brazil, while Venezuela, Ecuador, El Salvador and Bolivia are struggling to ensure the continuity of the processes of change, Balaguer said.

He also referred to the policy of blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States for more than 50 years, which he considered the main obstacle to its economic development and which he called for elimination.

The top PCC leader demanded the return of the territory the naval base in Guantanamo is occupying and the suspension of programs that attempt to subvert the Cuban political system.
