onuUnited Nations, United Nations.- Cuba today called on the UN Security Council for a multilateral and arranged response to the phenomenon of terrorism, which moves away from unilateral actions and double standards.

In an open debate by the 15-member body on terrorist threats to vital infrastructure, Cuba’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Anayansi Rodríguez, said that Havana supports the adoption of a general convention on the scourge and the summon for a world conference that will promote that type of response.

‘We reject and condemn double standards and selectivity in the treatment of this subject. The fight against terrorism can not be used as a pretext for interference and interventionism, aggression, or violations of international law and human rights, ‘she stated in the forum.

The diplomat also demanded the cessation of financing, equipment, training, supply of arms and support of all kinds to extremist groups that advocate violence and destruction in many parts of the world.

Rodríguez reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to the fight against terrorism and recalled that its people have suffered in their own flesh, with acts organized, financed and executed from abroad, responsible for nearly 3,500 dead and more than 2,000 disabled.

He also insisted that the Caribbean nation has never allowed or permitted the use of its territory to carry out, plan, encourage, cover up or finance such actions against other States, without exception.

Regarding the next challenges in the fight against this scourge, such as the use of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by terrorists, Rodríguez appealed to the efforts of all countries to tackle the problem.

The open debate of the Security Council allowed the unanimous adoption of resolution 2341, aimed at strengthening mechanisms to prevent and reduce the impact of terrorist actions against vital civilian infrastructure.
