The United Nations system is mobilized to support efforts to address the effects of Hurricane Irma in the eastern Caribbean, a spokesperson said this Friday.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for António Guterres, Secretary General of UN, said several agencies are deployed with their assistance in the field.

Dujarric echoed the statements of the new Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock, who remarked the actions of various entities since before Hurricane Irma´s arrival in the region, with its strong winds and torrential rains.

The United Nations accumulated resources and provided technical assistance to the Caribbean islands threatened by the meteor, which struck yesterday Antigua and Barbuda and then continued its destructive passage through the Virgin Islands, Anguilla, St. Martín, Puerto Rico and other territories.
